What exactly is autoprotolysis? Does it refer to one specific reaction or does it describe a different type of reaction?

Autoprotolysis refers to reactions where an amphiprotic molecule reacts with itself. The most common example is water. Water is amphiprotic because it can donate or accept a proton, this gives us the equation 2H2O <-> H3O+ + OH-. One water molecule donates a proton in the form of a hydrogen (forming the OH-) while the other molecule accepts the hydrogen (forming the H3O+).
