In the tissues the equilibrium H3O+ (aq) + HbO2- (aq) Δ HHb(aq) + H2O(l) + O2(aq) releases oxygen. When muscles work hard, they produce lactic acid as a by-product. (a) What effect will the lactic acid have on the concentration of HbO2- ? (b) When the hemoglobin returns to the lungs, where oxygen concentration is high, how does the concentration of HbO2- change?

a) Muscles work hard -> no oxygen -> produces lactic acid.
If you think about what happens when the concentration of oxygen decreases, based on what we learned on the response to change of concentration, more oxygen will be produced to replace the oxygen that has been decreased. If more oxygen is produced, then more HbO2- will be used up to produce that oxygen. Therefore, we can assume that lactic acid will cause the concentration of HbO2- to decrease to produce more HHb and oxygen to replenish the lack of oxygen so that means the concentration of HbO2- will be lowered.

b) When the hemoglobin returns to the lungs where oxygen concentration is high, we again refer to Le Chatelier's Principle and the response of equilibria to concentration. The concentration of HbO2- will increase and oxygen will decrease because now, you have more than enough oxygen and you need that to be converted to HbO2-. More oxygen will be bound to HHb to produce HbO2-, increasing the concentration.
