Strong acids and bases

Postby Katherine Grillo 1B » Mon Jan 21, 2019 1:32 pm

Are we supposed to just know the list of strong acids and bases? Or is there a way to figure out if the acid/base is strong and completely dissociates based on the chemical equation we're given?

Yeah, it is probably best to just memorize the list of the 7 strong acids and 8 strong bases.
Here is a link to a list if you need it: http://www.austincc.edu/chemlab/strongacidbase

You can also get a clue based on the Ka or Kb given. A large number means it will dissociate strongly.

Strong acids and bases can also be recognized by their percent dissociation. Strong bases and acids fully dissociate while weak ones hardly do.

I think it would definitely be beneficial to memorize the common strong acid and bases.
