Conjugate Base and Acid
How do we determine what is the conjugate base and what is the conjugate acid in a reaction?

A conjugate acid is a base with a hydrogen ion added to it. And a conjugate base is what is left over after an acid has donated a proton during a chemical reaction.

Re: Conjugate Base and Acid
An example would be the reaction 2H2O --> H3O+ + OH-, where the conjugate base of H2O is OH- and the conjugate acid of H2O is H3O+. In the opposite reaction H3O+ + OH- --> 2H2O, the conjugate base of H3O+ would be H2O, and the conjugate acid of OH- would be H2O. You simply add a proton to find the conjugate acid, and remove a proton to find the conjugate base.

A strong acid has a weak conjugate base just as a strong base has a weak conjugate acid.
