A way to think about Q is a checkpoint to check where the reaction is at in the process of nearing equilibrium. (i.e. if Q<K, there is still more reactant that is being reacted to form the product. if Q>K, there is more product than the reactant would produce at equilibrium and thus, the reaction will favor the production of the reactants.) If Q=K, then the reaction is at equilibrium.
