Writing K expression with or without aq?

Postby ckilkeary 2G » Wed Jan 08, 2020 4:47 pm

I know that when writing K and Q expressions you don't include molecules in solid and liquid state. But what about aqueous?

You do include molecules that are in an aqueous solution (aq)

If the reactants and products are in the aqueous state, then you should include them in your K expression (more specifically in regards to Kc).

Reactants and products that are in the aqueous state are included. As the other person said, it's pretty much used with Kc.

Aqueous solutions do contribute to the K expression since those solutions can change in concentration (measurably) over time.

Aqueous solutions are included since it's not a pure liquid. it is present as a water solution, but it may change how it behaves in a reaction. anything labeled as a liquid is a pure substance therefore not included when calculating K. pure liquids and solids have activities that are equal to 1.
