Why is the activity of pure substances equal to zero?

According to the textbook, "activities are used to take into account deviations from ideal behavior". Since solids and liquids are considered to be completely pure substances, they do not deviate from ideal behavior. Therefore, their activity is equal to 1, not zero.

The activity of pure substances are actually not equal to zero they are equal to one.

Activity is equal to 1 in order to not change any values

It's actually equal to one, not zero. Therefore, in the equation they have no effect.
