ICE Tables

Postby Megan Cao 1I » Fri Jan 10, 2020 11:14 pm

Do we use the ICE table for reactions with only gases and aqueous reagents? Can we use them with liquid and solid reagents?

When writing out your equilibrium constant, you wouldn't consider liquids and solids present in the reaction since they are pure substances and don't change over the course of the reaction. So when you write out your ICE box, you would only include gases and aqueous products and reactions.

Yes an ICE box is only used for gases and aqueous reagents because they are not pure substances and can change over the course of a reaction. In establishing equilibrium constants, solids and liquids are not used/considered due to the fact that they're pure substances that don't change.

For ICE tables, only include the reactants and products that you would use to calculate K.

The activities of pure solids and liquids are equal to 1, which is why they don't affect the equilibrium constant and why you don't include them in your ICE table.

ICE table only involve gases and aqueous substances. We assume the the concentrations of solids and liquids are 1.
