Homework 5G.1 Help

5G.1 asks to "State whether the following statements are true or false. If false, explain why." For Part D of the question, it says "If one starts with higher concentrations of reactants, the equilibrium concentrations of the products will be larger." Why is that marked as true when "If one starts with a higher pressure of reactant, the equilibrium
constant will be larger" (Part C of the same question) is false?

For pressure the equilibrium moves towards the side with the lower moles, what Dr. Lavelle showed in class Friday.

Essentially, because the reaction wants to reach equilibrium again after you add more reactant, that reactant will go through the reaction to form the product and the reaction will move forward, causing more product to form till it reaches equilibrium again.

Make sure you're reading the question very closely. Part D is comparing the initial concentrations of reactant (what you start with) and equilibrium concentrations of product (what you end up with once the reaction reaches equilibrium). It says that if you START with higher concentrations of reactants, then the equilibrium concentrations will end up being higher, which makes sense because if you add more reactants, then there will be more products in the end.

On the other hand, Part C is comparing the pressure of reactant and the equilibrium constant (K). This one is false because increasing the pressure of the reactant will not change the equilibrium constant; the equilibrium constant stays the same. However, increasing the pressure of the reactant will increase the pressure of product. The equilibrium constant doesn't change because it is just the ratio of product to reactant and therefore is not changed by an increase in reactant.
