ICE tables

Postby Elizabeth Harty 1A » Fri Jan 17, 2020 3:59 pm

How do we know when we need to use an ICE table vs when we can just use the equation of products over reactants?

We use the ICE tables when the initial concentrations rather than the equilibrium concentrations are given meanwhile we can go straight to the K equation (products over reactants) when the equilibrium concentrations are already given.

You use ice tables when the reactants don't dissociate completely. When there is not a strong acid or base involved, use ice tables.

you usually use ice tables when the initial concentration is given

We use ICE tables when the question is asking for the equilibrium concentrations of the reactants and products and it's not explicitly said that whatever numbers you are given are the equilibrium concentrations.

To determine if an ICE table is necessary, look at the information given, such as the initial concentration of a weak acid or base and the ka or kb value rather than the equilibrium concentration.
