Strong or weak acid?

Postby CameronDis2K » Fri Jan 17, 2020 4:15 pm

How can you tell based on the chemical formula of a compound that it is a strong or weak base? Like I know my memory HCl and CH3COOH as strong and weak, respectively, but don't really know any others.

Usually H with any of the halogens is a strong acid such as HCl, HI, HBr, and H2SO4. Also for strong bases, they'll usually have OH at the end like LiOH, NaOH, or Ba(OH)2.

I memorized a chart of the most common strong acids, for bases though it is any of the oxides or hydroxides of group 1 and 2 elements.

Hello. You have to memorize what the strong acids and bases are. If an acid or base is not in the list of strong acids/bases, it is safe to assume that they are weak. I have this picture from Professor Caram's Chem 14A lecture. Image
You can also look them up on google

The best way to know which acids are weak are to know which acids are strong. Everything that isn't a strong acid is essentially a weak acid. The strong acids are HBr, HClO4, H2SO4, HNO3, HCl, and HI.
SImilar logic can be applied to the bases. The strong bases are all the hydroxides and the ones that contain (OH) groups in groups 1 and 2 of the periodic table.

I think memorizing the strong acids and bases will help since there aren't many of them to begin with. Just assume everything else is weak.
