Homework 6c.1

Write (a) the chemical equation for the proton transfer equilibrium in water and the corresponding expression for Ka and (b) the chemical equation for the proton transfer equilibrium of the conjugate base and the corresponding expression for Kb for each of the following weak acids:
i) HClO2 ii) HCN (iii) C6H5OH

Not sure how I should go about doing this problem.

(a) This means to write the reaction for how the proton on an acid would transfer to form hydronium in the products. (HA + H2O <--> H3O+ A-). Because the problem says in correspondence to Ka, we know they are referring to the acid rather than base reaction.

(b) This means to write out the equation for how each given weak base will react with water to form OH-. Using this reaction, you can find the equation for the Kb. If the substance given is an acid, the reactant will start with the conjugate base
(i) HClO2: ClO2- + H2O <--> HClO2 + OH- and Kb = ([OH-][HClO2])/([ClO2])
