### Approximation

For approximating the value of x, does K have to be smaller than 10^-3 or can it also be equal to 10^-3

It has to be less than so anything 10^-4 and smaller.

It has to be smaller. Also check once you have your x value to make sure its less than 5% of the initial concentration,if it is then its a good approximation.

Anything equal to or less than 10^-3 is considered by Lavelle as small.

The logic behind this is that if K is sufficiently small, then very little of the species dissociates. Thus, the concentration is essentially unchanged.
