Midterm question 3D

Postby Paige Lee 1A » Tue Feb 25, 2020 10:12 am

Could someone please explain why the answer is -1?

At pH 6, what is the net charge for acetic acid, CH3COOH (pKa=4.75)?

To do this problem you need to compare the pH and pKa... If the pH is lower than the pKa, then the compound will be protonated. If the pH is higher than the pKa, then the compound will be deprotonated.

Here, since pH 6 is greater than pKa 4.75, the compound will be deprotonated will gives CH3COO- and the net charge is -1.
