When to use ICE box
Hello! When do we specifically know when to use the ICE box when solving for equilibrium concentrations? And is the term "equilibrium composition" another way of saying equilibrium concentrations?

Re: When to use ICE box
We use ICE box to find unknown concentrations at equilibrium or initial given the concentration of one of the reactants or products. And yes finding equilibrium composition means the same as finding equilibrium concentrations.

Re: When to use ICE box
You would use the ICE box when you are given an initial concentration of a weak acid or base, and you are trying to calculate the equilibrium concentration of both the products and the reactants.

Re: When to use ICE box
You wouldn't use ICE when you are given all the concentrations AT equilibrium (in which case you'd just be able to calculate K easily). But, if you don't know the values at equilibrium and are only given initial values, you'd have to use ICE.

Re: When to use ICE box
You use ICE box to organize the information you have. If they give you an initial concentration you can represent missing variables with x and make this equal to the equilibrium constant.

Re: When to use ICE box
Its usually most common when they are asking for something outside of the Kc i.e the Qc. The value of x after all is the amount of change between these two values.

I find that ICE charts are always useful for problems that give you any concentrations. They're a great way to organize the information you have. Sometimes you might not actually need one, but I think they help conceptualize the information you're given.

Re: When to use ICE box
Equilibrium composition is just another way of saying equilibrium concentrations. You have to use ICE Box when the initial concentrations are given and you have to solve for equilibrium concentrations or vice versa.

Re: When to use ICE box
You use ICE box whenever you're given an initial concentration and need to know the concentrations at equilibrium. You can also use it backwards if given a pH, and want to find the initial concentrations! :))

Use ICE box when you need to find concentrations, or when you're given initial or final concentration. and yes it is

Re: When to use ICE box
Hello! We use the ICE box when we are solving for the equilibrium concentration of both products and reactants and attempting to track the change that took place from the initial concentration. Most of the time the initial concentration is provided in the question and that is when we'd have to use the ICE box to further solve for the concentrations.

Re: When to use ICE box
ICE boxes are usually used to find any unknown concentration and is vital for calculating numbers like pOH and pH depending on the nature of the question.

This was where I was getting confused when going over the textbook problems, I wasn't paying attention to the fact that the concentrations weren't at equilibrium. I just need to be more careful, thank you!

Re: When to use ICE box
You use the ICE box when being asked to find the equilibrium concentration. I think a good way to approach a problem is to see what you are given and what you already know or can determine, and then see what would apply to solve the question.

Re: When to use ICE box
It's also worth noting that ICE boxes can be used to solve equilibrium problems involving pressure as well, not just concentration. One of the problems in the previous Sapling HWs had that.
Re: When to use ICE box
Use the ICE box whenever you're trying to figure out how concentrations change before and after a reaction reaches equilibrium, basically.

Re: When to use ICE box
I use ice box when I need to find concentrations of the molecules because you set up a quadratic or algebraic problem to solve for your concentration. You need to know the K value!
Re: When to use ICE box
Use ICE boxes to find unknown concentrations when given the concentration of another substances.

Re: When to use ICE box
Yes, equilibrium composition means equilibrium concentrations. You use the ICE box when you are given initial concentrations and you need to find K or the equilibrium concentrations.
Re: When to use ICE box
Use when given info on a weak acid or base to compare initial and final concentrations.

ICE boxes are used to find unknown concentrations at equilibrium or initial ones when given the concentration of reactants or products. Finding equilibrium composition means the same as finding equilibrium concentrations.
