I'm having trouble understanding the concept of activity. What exactly is it?

Activity is just the numerical value of the pressure or molarity. So if you're looking at gasses, the activity is just the pressure of the gas molecule. If you're looking at the concentrations of the reactants and products in a reaction, then the activity is simply the value of the concentrations. If you look at page 425, there is a little chart thing. There, it shows the "simplified form" of the activity. That form shows simply the pressure, or concentration of the substance.
