Achieve Week 3 #6
Can someone break down how to classify salts as acidic basic or neutral? I read the hints and I managed to sort them correctly but I'm still a little confused as to why each falls where.

Neutral salts will have the cation of a strong base and the anion of a strong acid. Li+ from LiOH and Cl- from HCl
Acidic salts will cause the solution to become more acidic when dissolved.
NH4+ + ClO4- + H2O --> NH3+ +H30+ +CLO4-. (Weak base NH3 does not overshadow the H3O+ being produced, and Clo4 is a spectator ion.
Basic salts will produce OH- in the solution and a weak acid (which doesn't do much in neutralizing the OH- so the solution is still basic)
PO4-+H20 ---> HPO4 + OH-
F- + H2O ---> HF + OH-

Here's rules to catagorize the salts:
acidic salt: strong acid, weak base
neutral salt: strong acid, strong base
(weak acid, weak base is another scenario not in this question)
basic salt: weak acid, strong base
just look at the list of strong acids and bases to categorize the strength of the acid and base for each salt
