pH of solution

Postby Aren_Kasparian_1G » Wed Jan 19, 2022 11:06 am

What did the professor mean when he said that only weak species effect the pH of a solution?

I think this refers to acidic salts or bases. Anions of strong acids like chloride, fluoride, or iodide won't affect the pH of a solution in a salt. Cations of strong bases (group 1 and 2 metals) also won't affect the pH.

Strong acids will produce weak conjugate bases and strong bases will produce weak conjugate acids, but weak acids will produce strong conjugate bases and weak bases will produce strong conjugate acids. When we consider salts we only consider species from weak acids/bases when determining what affects if a salt is acidic, basic, or neutral.
