% Ionization vs. % protonation
can someone explain to me the differences between these two? is ionization only for acids and protonation only for bases? also, % ionization needs the value to be under 5% in order to use the approximation rule, is that also the case with % protonation? any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: % Ionization vs. % protonation
protonation happens to bases and ionization happens to acids
when a weak base reacts with water to form its conjugate acid and OH-,
NH3 + H2O --> NH4+ + OH-. In this case the NH3 gains a proton and is protonated.
when a weak acid reacts with water it gives a proton to water and is ionized
HA + H2O ---> A- + H3O+
I believe the 5% rule applies in both cases!

Re: % Ionization vs. % protonation
hey ! I believe acids get ionized because they donate a proton so %ionization is in response to acids, protonation happens to bases because they accept a proton so % protonation would be in response to bases. im not too sure about the 5% rule though.

Roxan and Divya already covered protonation vs ionization, but I'm pretty sure that the 5% rule applies either way!

Re: % Ionization vs. % protonation
You are correct in thinking that percentage ionization is only for acids and percentage protonation is only for bases.
