Acid Ionization

How can you tell if an acid is ionizing completely or partially?

an acid ionizes completely when it is a strong acid. all other acids are weak acids and will not fully ionize. it is best just to memorize the strong acids, which can be found on achieve, in the textbook, or simply on google. in general, though, it is a hydrogen atom plus a halogen element (except fluorine), but there are other acids besides these ones that are strong.

Hi Gianna,

While the structure of the conjugate acid/base will provide information on relative stability, it is difficult to assess whether an acid will completely ionize in solution. (All acid strength is inherently relative and "complete deprotonation" is merely a method of oversimplifying their behavior. For instance, some monoprotic acids continue to be stronger than HCl).)To best answer questions involving complete ionization, it is best to memorize the strong inorganic acids. There should be a chart in the resources of the ebook.

An acid will ionize completely if it is a strong acid (the list in the textbook). Other than those, we can assume that the acid is weak and only partially ionizes

An acid only completely ionizes if it is a strong acid. We are expected to memorize these ones. Any other acids all are weak acids and ionize partially.

An acid is ionized completely if for example 0.1 M HCl produces 0.1 M of H+ ions. However, in other cases that's not true such as if we took 0.1 M HF for example, which is a weak acid. Then the H+ would be less than 0.1 M because not all of the molecules were dissociated.

Strong acids will ionize completely while weak acids will only ionize partially.

Strong acids only ionize completely/close to completely, while weak acids ionize partially. The best way to know whether an acid ionizes completely is by memorizing the strong acids since there are more weak acids than strong acids. Whatever is not a strong acid is a weak acid.

As stated previously, an acid will only completely ionize if it is a strong acid. The other acids, are considered weak acids and will only ionize partially.

We will know that acid has been ionized completely if when writing the chemical formula of that acid/base that it is reacting with, it forms water and a conjugate salt.
