5I textbook problems

Postby Aya Watson 2B » Thu Jan 27, 2022 4:13 pm

How come in 5I.23 from the textbook we don't divide by 10L until after we use the ICE box? Sometimes the solutions manual makes the concentrations per liter before the ICE box (eg. in 5I.19).

Hi Aya!

For this problem, it wouldn't make a difference if you used concentrations starting at the beginning or the end. Sometimes, when problems are given in moles it's easier to work with them for the ICE box and then convert at the end when you are working with K. For example, doing ICE boxes for titrations are a bit more straightforward with moles rather than molarity.

If you are ever confused on which way works you can do it both ways and then calculate the equilibrium constant with the molar ratios you get for the equilibrium. If the values match then both ways work, otherwise it may have been a problem where you needed to start with moles.
