Achieve week 2 Q9/10

Postby Vivian Kim 3F » Sat Jan 28, 2023 3:30 pm

Hi I was wondering if anyone can help explain what questions 9 and 10 mean by charged, neutral, or unknown when looking at the pH. Thanks!

Because the definition of acid and bases is based on the attraction and release of H+ hydrogen ions, acids that release protons often turn molecules into a positive charge whereas bases that attract protons tend to give molecules a negative charge.

Hi!

When ph of the solution = pKa of the weak acid, there are equal amounts of the neutral and the charged species in solution. When pH > pKa, charged becomes more prominent. When pH<pKa, neutral will be more prominent. For weak bases, it is the opposite in that when pH values > pKa, neutral will be more prominent and when pH < pKa, charged will be more prominent in the solution. I'm not too sure what unknown would be, but I think it might be when the pH of the solution is qual to the pKa? I hope this helps!
