Salt acting as weak acid/ base

Postby Sonia_Parikh_1H » Sat Jan 28, 2023 4:26 pm

Hi, when we're given the molarity of a salt that acts as a weak acid/ base, will the salt dissociate completely in water or only partially dissociate into its cation and anion? For example, say we're told that the salt NaClO acts as a weak base and given that it's molarity is 0.050 M, when we are calculating the pH can we use 0.05 M for the initial concentration of ClO- or is there another calculation required to find this initial concentration to use in an ICE table?

I think we can just assume the concentration of ClO- is 0.05M because Na would be a spectator ion in this scenario.
