Textbook Problem 5I.19 (outline 1)

Postby Ruby Stuart 1I » Sun Jan 29, 2023 4:34 pm

Hi, can someone help me with this problem?

Question: A reaction mixture that consisted of 0.400 mol H2 and 1.60 mol I2 was introduced into a flask of volume 3.00 L and heated. At equilibrium, 60% of the hydrogen gas had reacted. What is the equilibrium constant K for the reaction H2 (g) + I2 (g) >< 2HI (g) at this temperature?

Set up an ice table! The problem gives you the initial moles of the reactants in the equilibrium, from which you can then divide by total volume to find concentration. Then, you need to determine the "C" portion of the ice table. Just look at the sentence, "60% of the hydrogen gas had reacted at equilibrium". If 60% of the hydrogen gas reacted to reach equilibrium, this must mean that .6*H2initial is the "C" value for the H2. Now, you can use molar ratios to solve for the rest of your ice table values, and finally the K.
