How do you know when something is going to be a spectator ion?

Usually, something is a spectator ion when the molecule completely dissociates or protonates in water. These are usually strong acids, bases, or salts. The spectator ion can be seen on both sides in the ionic equation and then it is canceled out on both sides of the equation for the net ionic equation.
