Units of Kp

Postby TiaPayne1F » Tue Jan 31, 2023 5:49 pm

Does the units for equilibrium constant for partial pressures have to be in atm?

I'm doing problem 5.35 right now and noticed that the Kilopascals (Kpa) were all divided by 100, so I'm assuming it was to convert to atm. Does this apply to every problem? Should I always convert to atm?

Hi,

Kp and Kc do not have units. They are equilibrium constants, so when you calculate them, you should only end up with numerical values.

In general, concentrations for a question where you are solving for Kp are given in bar or atm. However, if you are given other units, there is no need to convert them into bar or atm as long as all the products and reactants involved in the Kp expression have the same units. This is because any unit conversion you make will get cancelled out in the expression, so in the end it doesn't really change anything.

Hope that makes sense!
