Forward or reverse reaction favored when volume of container is reduced

Postby Jordan Guzman 3A » Tue Mar 12, 2024 1:19 pm

If we measure reaction quotient using partial pressure and say that the volume of the container in which the reaction is occurring is reduced how do we know whether the forward or reverse reaction will be favored?

If the volume is reduced, increasing pressure, the reaction will shift to the side with fewer moles of gas to counteract the change. To determine the favored direction (forward or reverse), compare the new reaction quotient (Q) to the equilibrium constant (K).

To add on to the other commenter's post, if you have a calculated Q value that is less than K, then your reaction will continue in the forward direction, but if your calculated Q is greater than K, it will proceed with the reverse reaction.
