acidic vs basic salts strengths

Postby Jennifer Fimbres » Sun Mar 17, 2024 11:14 pm

When determining if a salt is acidic, basic, or neutral, what is a good indicator of a strong acid and weak base or vise versa, are we just supposed to memorize strong acids and strong bases or is there a way to determine?

If the Ka/Kb is given, then you'll know it's a weak acid/base. If it isn't given, you can assume it's a strong acid/base and there's full dissociation.

When determining the acidity or basicity of a salt, consider the strength of the acids and bases that formed it. Strong acids and bases tend to produce neutral salts when combined. If a strong acid reacts with a weak base, the resulting salt is acidic. Conversely, if a weak acid reacts with a strong base, the salt is basic. For salts formed from weak acids and weak bases, their acidity or basicity depends on the relative strengths of the acid and base.

look at the cation and anion that forms the salt and whether the acid or base that forms them is strong or not.
you can memorize strong acids/bases like this:
Hi (HI)
Class is (HCL
boring?(HBr
no!(HNO3)
Class is over?(HClO3)
class is over, (HClO4 )
so? (H2(SO)4_
Like (LiOH)
Nathan (NaOH)
Knows (KOH)
California is (Ca(OH)2)
super (Sr(OH)2)
basic ( Ba(OH)2)
