A spontaneous reaction is a reaction that takes place without any external interference; a spontaneous reaction is exothermic (there is a decrease of energy in the system).

Spontaneous can also be described as thermodynamically favorable, as stated above this occurs without external interference. If I remember correctly spontaneous conditions are exothermic and have positive change in entropy.

To add on, the products of a spontaneous reaction are generally more stable than the reactants. Therefore, a spontaneous reaction can occur without any additional input of energy, and as said in the reply above, it normally releases energy.

A spontaneous reaction is one that favors the formation of products since it is more energetically favorable
