Catalysts

Postby Kimberly 1H » Wed Jan 16, 2019 5:25 pm

Why don't catalysts affect the equilibrium composition of a reaction mixture?

A catalyst speeds up the forward and back reaction to the same extent. The relative rates of the two reactions won't be affected and thus equilibrium composition will not be changed. Hope this helps!

Catalysts simply speed up the rates of both the forward and reverse reactions, and equilibrium will be reached more quickly. The concentrations of reactants and products at equilibrium will be unchanged.

Catalysts will speed up both the forward and reverse reaction by lowering the activation energy. This means that equilibrium will be reached more quickly.

Catalysts has no effect on the Equilibrium composition, but simply speeds up the process to Equilibrium.

Catalysts only speed up the rate of the reaction. They do not have anything to do with the favoring of one side of the reaction or another. They only get you to the products that you want faster and nothing more.

Catalysts only effect the activation energy, and doesn't effect the reaction itself at all.

A catalyst can only speed up the foward or reverse reaction and thus it doesn't really change the reaction itself.
