Acids and Bases

Postby Ricardo Martin 1J » Wed Jan 23, 2019 9:55 am

How can you tell if a molecule is an acid or a base (based on its chemical formula)?

It depends on which defintion you use. A Bronsted acid donates a proton, so it must at least have a proton in the formula.

Which definition should we be using to determine if something is an acid or a base?

I think we've been using the Bronsted definition.

For Chem 14B during the ICE tables and chemical equilibria, I believe we have been using the Bronsted acids and bases definition.

You can also tell if it is an acid or base based on the equation. If it gives off OH-, then it is a base, and if it gives off H3O+, it is an acid.

We've been doing Bronsted Acids and Bases for the most part because of the [H3O+] and [OH-] on the products sides mostly because we've been dealing with pH and pOH levels within solutions.
