Strong vs Weak Acids and Bases

Postby Kylie Joe 2A » Sun Jan 17, 2021 12:20 am

For questions that ask us for the pH of a given reaction, are we expected to automatically know if the reactants are strong/weak or will this be made clear in an exam question?

It'd probably be best to memorize the strong acids/bases as there aren't that many.

A tip to help you memorize strong acids is the phrase: SO I Brought NO Clean Clothes

SO- HSO4
I- HI
Brought- HBr
NO- HNO3
Clean- HCl
Clothes- HClO3/HClO4

I don't really know any for the bases but if the cation is within groups one or two then it is a strong base.

I've heard that memorizing strong acids are your best bet. There aren't too many and it's easy to google a list of them!

For chem 14A exam questions I remember having to be able to identify strong acids/bases so I definitely would memorize them.

Memorizing the strong acids and bases is the best bet because then you can easily identify which ones are weak acids and bases during an exam.

Here is a list of the strong bases:
LiOH - lithium hydroxide
NaOH - sodium hydroxide
KOH - potassium hydroxide
RbOH - rubidium hydroxide
CsOH - cesium hydroxide
*Ca(OH)2 - calcium hydroxide
*Sr(OH)2 - strontium hydroxide
*Ba(OH)2 - barium hydroxide

Like others have said, I think it would be best to try and memorize the strong acids/bases.
