Strong Acids/Bases

Postby Emily_Stenzler_2H » Wed Jan 27, 2021 11:30 am

Which chart should we be studying to memorize the strong acids+ bases? I believe chart 6C.3 has more strong acids and bases than the chart we had studied for 14A- is this the chart we should be referring to for 14b?

I think the chart is showing a range of strong acids to weak acids and how they compare to weak conjugate bases, showing that the stronger the acid is, the weaker its conjugate base and vise versa. I don't think it's actually giving more strong acids (meaning acids that dissociate completely in water), so I would just stick with the list from 14A that we used last quarter.

I think the only ones we need to know for this course are the strong acids H2SO4, HI, HBr, HNO3, HCl, HClO3, HClO4 and the strong bases are Group 1 & Group 2 metal oxides/hydroxides. Hope that helps!

Hi! I agree with above that you should have the most common strong acids memorized, but that will probably happen in general with the more practice problems you do and recognize the patterns that they share

Strong acids are: HCl, HI, HBr, H2SO4, HNO3, HClO4, and HClO3. Everything else in this class is a weak acid. Strong bases include the first and second groups of metal oxides, such as NaOH, and Ca(OH)2. Everything else is a weak base. These should be memorized, especially in the context of acid base equilibria, because if you encounter a strong acid, you know that the concentration of the acid will equal the concentration of H+ at equilibrium, and a strong base's concentration will be the same as the concentration of OH- at equilibrium.

Hi! Bouncing off above, a quick google search gives me the following mnemonics:
Strong Bases:
Larry (Li) Never (Na) Killed (K) Real (Rb) Cats (Cs) Carly (Ca) Said (Sr) Boldly (Ba)
or a more horrifying one
Little Nannies Kill Rabbits Causing Carnivorous Screaming Babies
And for Strong Acids: (this one I got from a friend, I'll try to link the original post but I'm unsure how linking works exactly) https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=70215&p=286548&hilit=strong+acids&sid=3b283084fe5f48d3b822b6c09a9201f1&sid=3b283084fe5f48d3b822b6c09a9201f1#p286548
SO (H2SO4) I (HI) Brought (HBr) NO (HNO3) CLean (HCL) ClOthes (HClO3 & HClO4)

I was also having trouble with which strong acids/bases I should memorize, so thanks to everyone for the resources and explanations, it really helped!

For every acid created there is an equal that will rise to meet it. call it good physics or the force. there exists an acid called flouroantimonic acid that is a million times more powerful than the last previously corrosive acid. This acid when dropped in water literally detonates and shatters the glass. to meet its equal exists a base known as ortho-diethynylbenzene dianion a strong base maybe not as powerful but defenitely up there with it. Now imagine what happens if you mix them.

To add on, you can also check out the Chempendix on Sapling! They have a list of strong acids and bases there as well.

Thanks everyone! I also wasn't sure which strong acids and bases to memorize, but the response and charts were really helpful.

I like referring to the one found on sapling under chempendix! It has a large range of references and some explanations so you can go beyond blatant memorization

The one on sapling under chempendix is also the one I've been referring to. They honestly become a lot easier to recognize after you consistently do practice problems with them!

Definitely using a chart is helpful because not all of these have oh or h in their name making it harder to identify the type of substance.

You should memorize that H2SO4, HI, HBr, HNO3, HCl, HClO3, HClO4 are the seven strong acids.

Here's a link with the string acids and bases which should be memorized:

You need to know the 7 strong acids: HCl, HI, HBr, H2SO4, HNO3, HClO4, and HClO3
as well as the 8 strong bases: (Li) (Na)(K) (Rb) (Cs) (Ca) (Sr) (Ba)
I'm pretty sure this is all you need to memorize for the strong acids/bases but someone please correct me if I'm missing anything
