strong vs weak acid pH level

Postby IsabelMurillo3K » Sun Mar 14, 2021 11:24 pm

Hey guys!
I was having trouble answering one of the objectives from outline 2 and I was wondering if anyone could help out:
-Explain why solutions of weak acids have higher pH values than solutions of strong acids at the same concentration.
Thank you!

Strong acids are going to fully dissociate into H+/H3O+ ions with their respective conjugate base. The concentration of H+ ions of a strong acid is gonna be greater than a weak acid's, so that leads to strong acids having lower pHs than a weak acid.

Strong acids fully dissociate which means that the concentration of H3O+ will be high. Weak acids do not fully dissociate so they have smaller concentration of H3O+. Therefore, strong acids have lower pH levels than weak acids.

pH is simply the measurement of the amount of H+ ions in solution. Because strong acids dissociate in water more than weak acids, there will be a higher concentration of H+ ions, causing the pH to be lower.

Strong acids fully dissociate in water, meaning that there will be a high concentration of H3O+. Thus, the solution is more acidic and will have a lower pH.

Strong acids (and bases) almost completely dissociate (assumed to be 100%) into their component ions, but weak bases do not. We can determine percent ionization for weak acids by looking at conjugate base concentrations divided by initial weak acid concentrations multiplied by 100. A strong acid fully dissociates, and since strong acids contain hydronium ions [H3O+], the pH is decreased. Esentially, if you put a mole of strong acid in water, you will get a mole of H30+, but a weak acid will only produce a fraction of a mole of hydronium ions. Therefore, the pH of a strong acid is lower than the pH of a weak acid.

This is due to the fact that strong acids almost fully dissociate and yield a higher proton concentration compared to weak acids, which do not complete dissociate and have a lower proton yield as a result. Hope that helps!

Hi!

pH is a measure of the concentration of H+ ions in solution. Lower H+ concentration —> higher pH, higher H+ concentration —> lower pH. Strong acids fully dissociate, so they produce a higher concentration of H+ ions, thus resulting in low pH. Weak acids do not fully dissociate, so less H+ is produced, resulting in higher pH.

pH is determined by the concentration of H+ ions within a solution. As we know, the stronger an acid is, the more it dissociates which causes an increase in H3O+ and raises the pH. A weaker acid will not dissociate as much as a strong acid (which almost completely dissociates), so it does not yield as much H3O+ and will have a higher pH.

Since strong acids fully disassociates in water, there is a high concentration of H+ ions. pH is a measure of the amount of H+ ions in a solution, strong acids will have a lower pH as they will yield higher concentration of H+ ions.

Strong acids are going to completely disassociate which means a greater H+ concentration in the water and therefore a lower pH. Weak acids aren't going to completely disassociate so they will release less H+ into the water meaning that the H+ concentration won't be as high and therefore the pH will be higher than for a strong acid.

As other commenters have explained, strong acids are able to dissociate into their ions completely. This leaves the solution with a very high [H3O+], and consequently, a low pH value. Weaker acids do not dissociate as completely (in fact, they don't dissociate even CLOSE to as completely as strong acids do!), so they are left with a smaller [H3O+] value and higher pH.

strong acids fully dissociate while weak acids do not. This means strong acids will have a higher concentration of H+ therefore lower pH.

strong acids will dissociate completely making the h30 concentration much higher. with weak acids it works the other way around.

Because strong acids fully dissociate into H+/H3O+ ions, the concentration of H+ ions of a strong acid is typically greater than that of a weak acid. Therefore, strong acids tend to have lower pHs than weak acid.

Strong acids dissociate completely, which means that they "release" more H3O+, therefore there will be a low pH value. On the other hand, weak acids dissociate only partially, meaning that the H3O+ concentration will be much lower.

Since pH = -log[H3O+], a higher pH indicates a lower [H3O+] concentration. Weak bases do not fully dissociate in water, and would thus create fewer H3O+ ions in identical conditions. This would lead to a lower overall [H3O+] concentration, and thus a higher pH. Hope this helps!

Because strong acids fully dissociate, this means that the concentration of [H30+] is greater causing the pH levels to be lower than weak acids which do not fully dissociate meaning that there is less concentration of [H30+] leading to a higher pH value.

Weak acids do not fully dissociate so there is less H30+ concentration, while storng acids dissociate more and release H30+, meaning their pH is lower. Hope this helps!

Strong acids have a lower pH because they fully dissociate and therefore yield more H+ ions. Weak acids have a higher pH because they do not fully dissociate and therefore do not yield as many H+ ions.

Strong acids will fully dissolve into H+ ions while weak acids will only partially dissolve. This causes the solution with the strong acid to have a higher H+ concentration and a lower pH as a result.

Weak acids by definition do not fully dissociate into H+ ions. Since pH is given by -log([H+]), the lower the H+ concentration the higher the pH. Therefore weak acids have a lower H+ concentration and therefore a higher pH than strong acids.

Hey,
This is because strong acids fully dissociate to H+ ions, while weak acids do not. As a result when calculating pH = -log [H+], the strong acid has more H+ ions so it will have a smaller pH while the weak acid will have a larger pH.
Hope that helps!

As people already said, stronger acids yield more H+, and weak acids yield less H+. When stronger acids have a higher [H+], for example 10^-3 mol/L, its pH will be -log[H+]=3. When weaker acids have a lower [H+], for example 10^-5 mol/L, its pH is -log[H+]=5. Therefore, the higher the pH, the less the [H+], the weaker the acid.

All you need to know is that the higher the PH, the weaker the acid. So it is only logical that if we have a strong acid, the PH will be lower.

The reason for this is because weaker acids tend to not dissociate fully into H+ ions. Since they have lower H+ concentration, the pH will be higher.

Hi!
Weak acids do not completely dissociate and thus the proton yield is lower.

Consequently, the pH is higher than for a strong acid which almost always dissociate completely and yields higher proton concentration.

Stronger Acids are going to completely dissociate in water. Thus the concentration of H+ or H3O+ is going to be much higher than weak acids. Therefore the pH value will be much lower as we are applying the -log.

Strong acids fully react and dissociate so there is a lot of H3O+ present making the ph low but with weak acids, they do not fully dissociate and have a lower H3O+. taking the negative log would make high H3O+ have lower Ph
