Strong Acids

Postby maya 3f » Mon Jan 17, 2022 1:03 am

I'm having trouble memorizing the strong acids, so I was wondering if there is an optimal way to learn them?

Hi,

If you search online there are many videos on how to remember the 7 strong acids. You can create your own Mnemonics too!
Here are two that I found pretty useful:

Hi Maya,

The strong acids can be memorized by simply looking at the periodic table and doing some practice problems! It’s usually the same few elements we often use so if you can find a way to trick your brain into making shortcuts to memorize it, you’re set to go. It sounds hard but it’s easier than it seems. For instance, you can start with the simply halogens. Just add a H in front of the first 3 elements after F (Cl, Br, and I) and you already have 3 of the strong acids memorized!

Hopefully this helped :)

I was personally able to memorize all the strong acids by referring to the "Review of Acids and Bases from Chem 14A" Achieve assignment/practice that the professor has under the Week 2 folder in CCLE. The solutions explanation for Question 1 for that assignment provides a link to a page that lists all the strong acids to memorize!

There's a couple trends and patterns when it comes to memorizing them but ultimately it just comes down to remembering them all.

One mnemonic I memorized was "SO I Br(ought) NO Cl(ean) ClO(thes)!" Here, the first part of the word equates to a component of one of the strong acids!
