Common Ion effect

Postby sboutros2B » Tue Nov 29, 2016 4:37 pm

I apologize if this was already posted! I just wanted a brief explanation of the common ion effect. I know it has a relation to Le Chatlier's Principal but just wanted a clearer explanation.
Thank you (:

Good question. The presence of a common ion will reduce the solubility of an ionic salt that includes the same ion. This is where Le Chatelier's principal comes in, which you correctly mentioned. For example, CaCO3 is less soluble in a solution full of CO32- than in a solution of pure water.

This perfectly cleared it up, thank you very much!
