How do pressure and volume affect a reaction?

increase in volume means a decrease in pressure so the reaction is shifted to the side w/more moles
decrease in volume means an increase in pressure so the reaction is shifted to the side w/fewer moles

Increasing pressure by compression (decreasing volume) will cause the reaction to proceed toward the side with fewer moles of gas.
Decreasing pressure by increasing volume will cause the reaction to proceed toward the side with more moles of gas.

Dr. Lavelle specified in class that just saying that the pressure changes does not necessarily affect the reaction, because if pressure is increased by adding an inert gas, nothing will happen.
