Changing Temperature

Postby Jacob Bershatski 4C » Sun Jan 13, 2019 9:33 am

Does changing the temperature in a reaction affect both the K value and concentration?

Yes, because when the temperature changes the reaction shifts one way or another (endothermic reactions shift towards product formation, exothermic reactions shift toward reaction formation). K is temperature dependent and also changes to reestablish equilibrium, and the concentrations of the reactants and products also change as a result of the shifting.

I think that's when you increase the heat of the rxn. Does anyone know what happens when the temp is lowered?

When the heat is lowered, you are giving off heat, so it would be an exothermic reaction (shifting towards the formation of products).

Think back to the ideal gas law PV=nRT. Pressure and volume are directly related Using what we know about exothermic and endothermic reactions, we can determine if the reaction shifts left or right but whats of superlative importance is that you know that temperature DOES change equilibrium. Think realistically about changing temperature. If you start burning wood, for example, a reaction occurs because a new equilibrium (under heat) is reached.
