endo/exothermic rxns

Postby Jennifer Lathrop 1F » Sun Jan 20, 2019 6:40 pm

Is there a way to tell if a reaction is endo or exothermic by looking at the equation?

We can come to certain conclusions that are more obvious, such as H2 -> 2H being endothermic, because H2 has lower energy than the 2 H's. However, because we are given more complex chemical reactions, it's not always possible.

Also, t the end of the equation it might give you delta H. If it is positive it is endothermic, while negative is exothermic.

The easiest way to tell if a reaction is endothermic or exothermic is by the change in enthalpy (delta H), which I believe will be given for these types of reactions.

Can you tell if a reaction is endo/exo just by the number of products vs. reactants?

^^ I was also wondering if this was a possible I feel like you can depending on the complexity of the equation but what else does it rely on?
