Question 1 on Midterm

Why would removing some NO (g) from the system not increase the partial pressure of NO2 (g) at equilibrium?

Removing NO from the system would cause the reaction to shift left in order to minimize the stress on the reaction. Partial pressure can be treated as concentration of a specific compound so if the reaction shifted left, NO2 concentration and partial pressure would decrease.

removing NO would cause the rxn to shift left, decreasing the concentration of the products, NO2. Since P=nRT/V, as the concentration goes down, so does the partial pressure. I hope this helps!

If there's less reactant (NO) then there's less matter available to make product (NO2), this is why when the reaction shifts to the left due to Le Chatelier's Principle, the equation must balance at a lower partial pressure on both sides.

Whenever you remove something from a system it shifts toward the thing that was removed to make more of it, because when you remove something you are making less of it and as Le Chateliers principle states, the reaction will do what it needs to to reduce the effect of a force on a system.

According to Le Chatelier's Principle, the system will adjust to maintain equilibrium. As a result, if you remove some NO from the system, the system will shift to the left to produce more NO and maintain this equilibrium. If the system shifts to the left, more NO2 is being used to produce NO. Thus, the partial pressure of NO2 would DECREASE.

Removing NO would make the reaction produce more reactants to balance out the reaction. Therefore NO2 partial pressure would decrease

Via Le Chatelier removing reactants from equilibrium causes the reaction to shift towards reactants, and removing products causes the reaction to shift towards products.
