For part d) in 5J.5: State whether reactants or products will be favored by an increase in the total pressure (resulting from compression) or if there is no change on the equilibria. 2HD(g) + H2(g) ⇌ D2(g)
Originally my answer was that the products would be favored because there is 1 mole compared to 3 moles of reactants, but when I looked at the solutions manual it said neither is favored because there is the same number of moles on each side. Is there something that I'm missing by any chance? My thought process was that since there are more moles of reactants more products would then be formed so therefore products would be favored.

In my textbook (I use the pdf version), the equation is 2HD(g) = H2(g) + D2(g), so that might be the issue! I would check the problem again. Your thought process seems correct.

Like the previous answer stated I think it's an issue with the textbook problem and not your conceptual understanding, because you're approaching it correctly! My textbook also had 2HD(g) <--> H2(g) + D2(g).

I had the same exact thought going into the problem, so you're not alone! For the reaction that you're given 2HD(g) + H2(g) ⇌ D2(g), the products seem as though they will be favored due to the fact that the products' side has less moles.
