% protonated

Postby amreen_sandhu1k » Sun Jan 23, 2022 11:45 pm

Is the equation for the %protonated in a chemical reaction that involves making a buffer: final conc/initial conc * 100%, or is it different?

Yeah, the % protonated is as you wrote it; [final]/[initial] x 100%

I'm not sure but I thought it might also be the equation we used for Q5 in acheive week 2? Where we had to divide it by the total [BH+] + [B]. This could totally be wrong but on this website that's what it looked like?

Hi! Yes, Dr. Lavelle used the example of CH3NH2(aq)+H20(l)->CH3NH3+(aq)+OH-(aq)
The percent protonated equation would look like [CH3NH3+]/[CH3NH2]initial x 100%.
Hope this helps!

Yup! You wrote it correctly. The percent protonated is the final concentration/initial concentration * 100%.

Hi! Here is the equation for % pronated:
(final concentration/initial concentration) * 100
Hope this helps!

Yes, that is the correct equation. Something slightly off topic but still related is that when percent protonated is greater than 5 percent, you cannot assume x is negligible.

Yes, that is the correct equation for it. You would take the final concentration of the conjugate acid or base and divide that by the initial concentration of the base or acid initially put into the solution. To then get the percentage, you would take the answer from the previous division and multiply it by 100%.

Yup, you got it correct. The formula to calculate the % protonation would be as you mentioned:
[(final concentration) / (initial concentration)] * 100%

Yes that's the correct equation. Just take the final concentration of conjugate acid/base and divide that by an initial conc. of the base/acid in the solution.

Yes, the equation to find the percent protonated would be [final]/[initial] * 100%.

Yes, if you're trying to find the percent protonated, you need to do final concentration (since you're calculating the concentration of hydrogen) over initial and multiply by 100.

Hi!
Yes, this is correct. The equation for % protonated is (final)/(initial)*100.

Yes! That is correct. The % protonated would be the final concentration/initial concentration x 100.

% protonation = [BH+]/[B]initial x 100%
%ionization = [H3o+]/[HA]initial x 100%

% protonated in a solution is (concentration of ions, aka BH+, at equilibrium)/(concentration of base, aka B+, initially) * 100%. Hope this helps!

This is correct. It is the final concentration divided by the initial multiplied by 100% :)

Yes! What you wrote was in fact correct. % protonation = [BH+]/[B]initial x 100%
%ionization = [H3o+]/[HA]initial x 100%

Percent protonated is just [final]/[initial] * 100 to account for the percent.

Yeah exactly!

The percent protonated is the final concentration over the initial concentration x 100%.

Hope this helps!
