Weak vs strong (acid and salt)

Postby Carson Yoshida 3H » Sun Jan 29, 2023 2:40 pm

Hi, can someone explain the difference between a weak and strong acid/base? How does finding the pH for a strong acid/base differ from finding the pH for a weak acid/ base?

Strong acids and bases are completely ionized/dissociated in aqueous solutions while weak acids and bases are only partially ionized. Acids have pH values less than 7, with lower pH values being stronger acids. Bases have ph values greater than 7 with larger pH values being stronger bases.

For finding the pH and pOH of a weak acid or base, you'll be given some K constant as well. Strong acids and bases don't have this constant because they completely dissociate.

strong bases and acids are also completely ionized so you will have their ions as the product.
