Achieve Homework 2

When determining whether or not we need to use quadratic formula, I just want to clarify is x=0.023 would we have to use quadratic formula or can we just approximate?

Not enough information in your question to answer.

The equilibrium constant needs to be smaller than 10-3 to approximate.

As long as the x value that you calculated using the approximation is smaller than 5% of the initial concentrations given, then the approximation is valid. You can determine if this is true by dividing the x value by the smallest concentration given and multiplying by 100.

We know we can approximate based on the K value (if it is less than 10^-3). The x value doesn't tell us whether we can approximate, unless we are using it to find the percent ionization, which must be less than 5% for us to approximate.
