Strong vs Weak Acid

Postby Joanna_Sung_3F » Fri Dec 08, 2023 8:36 pm

Hello,
In lecture, Dr.Lauvelle mentioned that strong acids are typically inorganic and weak acids are typically organic. Can someone please explain the reasoning behind that? Thank you!

I believe that organic molecules typically have atoms that form stronger bonds with H than some inorganic molecules. Thus, the H bonds of organic molecules can't be broken as easily, making them weaker acids.

Because strong acids, such as HCl and H2SO4, have a propensity to fully ionize in water, they are usually inorganic. Weak acids, such as acetic acid (CH3COOH), are frequently organic, include carbon, and show partial ionization. Strong acids have weaker hydrogen bonds and weak acids have stronger ties between hydrogen and other atoms. This difference stems from the nature of bonding. I hope this helped a bit!
