how is oxidation number different from formal charge?

Hi! Oxidation numbers and formal charges are very similar but formal charges use the equation:

FC= Valence electrons of element - not bonded - (bonded electrons/2)

Meanwhile, the oxidation number of an atom is based on the overall valence electrons of the atom minus all electrons on the atom, regardless of whether they are non-bonding or bonding.
