HF Weak Acid

Postby Ellie_Keenan_2A » Sat Dec 09, 2023 3:52 pm

Why is HF a weak acid, even though HCl and the rest of the acids with group 7 anions are strong?

HF is a very strong bond as F is more electronegative than other atoms such as I. This stronger bond makes it harder for the hydrogen to be lost which makes it a weak acid whereas with weaker bonds, it is more likely that the H can be lost.

the hcl bond along with the other group anions also creates a much bigger ion and the bigger the anion is the stronger the acid is because bigger compounds would donate protons
