Oxoacids

Postby Dominique Zuk 1G » Mon Nov 21, 2016 2:57 pm

Could someone please explain why Hypochlorous acid (ClOH) is more acidic than Hypoiodous acid (IOH) as shown in the course reader on page 154? I know it has to do with the electronegativity values, but could someone please elaborate on it further? Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, ClOH is more acidic, because the Cl is more electronegaive, so it spreads the negative charge throughout the molecule, making it more stable.

ClOH is more acidic than IOH because Cl has a higher electronegativity than I, and as a result is able to stabilize the molecule better.
