Acid Strength

Postby Abby Ellstrom 1I » Fri Dec 08, 2017 12:29 am

Why is HF a stronger acid then HCl? I thought acid strength in this sense was determined by the electronegativity of the atom bonded to the H+ ion. Cl is more electronegative then F but on the homework it said that HF was stronger than HCl.

I think you might be mistaken, HCl is a stronger acid than HF.

There are 7 common strong acids and HCl is on that list, HF is not.

Yeah so HCl should be more acidic because it has a larger radius, therefore increasing the bond length between Cl and the H ion. This decreases the energy that it has, which makes it more stable. The more stable, the more acidic.

How can you determine what is a strong acid vs a weak acid?

I wonder the same thing, but I've heard one should focus on the conjugate base. The more stable base has the stronger acid.

In addition, to find which compound has more basic strength, basicity, would you also have to compare conjugate acids? *That is, discovering the conjugate acid of the basic compound, ranking those on acidity, and then reversing the order ranked to find the most/least basic?
