Strength of Acid and Bases

Postby Sophia Diaz - Dis 1B » Mon Jun 11, 2018 10:24 pm

When something is referred to as "less acidic" does that mean that it also a weaker acid and vise versa? How does the strength of acids refer to pKA because I don't really understand how it reflects acidic levels and strength?

when something is referred to as "less acidic" it's usually talking about the pH of something rather than the actual strength of the acid but a weak acid would cause little change in pH of a solution or make something acidic. An acid is strong when the pKA is lower and is weaker when the pKA is higher.

I agree that without more context besides "less acidic" I would assume that it is talking about a comparison between solutions with the less acidic one having a lower concentration of H30+

I would generally just refer to pH when it talks about being less acidic unless they specifically mention pKa's. Just easier to understand.
